For most people, April showers bring May flowers and other welcome signs of spring and summer. But for the 35 million people who suffer from asthma and allergies*, this time of year brings runny noses and itchy eyes. Below are a few facts and figures to help you literally and figuratively “clear the air” about allergens:
-An estimated 1 in 15 Americans suffer from asthma, and 50 percent of asthma cases are “allergic-asthma.” Asthma and allergies show no mercy. Allergens like pollen and mold spores are known irritants for millions of Americans – but simple steps such as keeping a clean home and avoiding allergy triggers can go a long way toward making life more comfortable.
-Eighty percent of allergists recommend frequent vacuuming with a vacuum with HEPA filtration to ward off allergens before they strike.** While over-the-counter drugs are great for treating allergy symptoms after they appear, a clean and filtered home environment can help ward off allergens before they strike. To take cleaning one step further, use vacuum accessories designed to keep air clean. For instance, the Filtrete by 3M line of bags, filters and belts provides excellent home filtration to keep allergens – and allergy symptoms – at bay. The accessories, which service nearly all brands and models of vacuum cleaners, are also available at Best Buy and bestbuy.com.
The average pollen particle (10 microns) and dust mite (30 microns) are smaller than the width of a human hair (70 microns). Animal dander is even smaller, at .3 microns. Allergens are tiny, but frequent and thorough cleaning can make a big difference in coping with allergies. However, those who suffer from extreme allergies may want to limit household plants and pets and take proactive steps to reduce moisture in the household to limit the formation of mold, which can aggravate existing allergies.

The timing of allergy season varies from place to place. Plants in different regions of the country release pollen into the air at different times, which means those pesky allergens can be hard to track down. Prevent uncomfortable allergic reactions with these tips.

Bedding is a common place for allergens to hide, so take extra care in cleaning the bedroom. Be sure to wash all bedding in hot water (hotter than 130°F) every 7 to 10 days.Cover mattresses and pillows with plastic covers. Many allergy sufferers find that allergy-proof bedding reduces some of their symptoms.

Take care to avoid allergens if you can help it. If dirt and dust triggers allergies, wear masks while cleaning. Limit household plants and pets, and be sure take any and all prescribed medicines regularly.

Keep the house free and clear of clutter, which can accumulate dust. It’s harder to clean in, around and under a lot of belongings. The more hard-to-clean and hard-to-reach surfaces there are in your home, the harder it is to keep dust and other allergens under control.
